Beyond the Spec Sheet

Few words in the guitar world create desire as quickly as mastergrade. It suggests rarity, perfection, and superiority. But wood is more complicated than that. As builders like Tom Sands have demonstrated in their research, "Mastergrade " is largely a visual and aesthetic metric. Visual perfection does not automatically guarantee a musical response. A flawless-looking top may be too heavy, or a perfectly even set of wood may possess too much internal damping.

Every piece of wood is treated as a unique event. We test the velocity of sound traveling through the wood using a Lucchi Meter; a top that registers a longitudinal velocity of 5500 or higher is immediately reserved for our Blue Label or Custom builds.
Most importantly, we abandon the factory concept of " standardized top thickness ". Instead, each soundboard is meticulously sanded and thinned down until it achieves a specific target level of deflection, balancing its unique stiffness against its weight. This philosophy extends to our back and side woods. The guitar world has long obsessed over the prestige of Brazilian Rosewood. While exceptional sets exist, a poor piece of Brazilian Rosewood is still a poor piece of wood. We source globally for the finest acoustic responses, utilizing highly responsive alternative tonewoods like African Padauk, Australian Blackwood, and Santos Rosewood. The goal is not to find the most expensive wood. The goal is to find the right wood for the right guitar.
