Part Six · Five Labels, One Voice

The Five Labels

A label is not only a category.

It is a promise. In the guitar world, labels are often used to separate price, decoration, rarity, or specification. One model sits above another. One series receives better wood. Another receives simpler appointments. The structure becomes a ladder. Hozen Guitars is different. The five labels are not simply steps on a commercial staircase. They are five expressions of the same maker-led philosophy — different intentions, different relationships to the player, different ways of balancing tone, ergonomics, tradition, modernity, rarity, and individuality. Gold, blue, red, black and green.

Each label has its own purpose. But behind all of them is one voice. Every Hozen instrument begins from the same belief: a guitar must be responsive, comfortable, musical, and honest. It must serve the player before it serves the catalogue. It must not only be assembled from materials, but also built with attention. The label tells the player what kind of relationship the guitar is meant to have with them. It tells them whether the instrument is a personal one-off, a pure performance tool, a traditional voice reinterpreted through Hozen's thinking, a modern fingerstyle-focused design, or a boutique ukulele carrying the same philosophy in a smaller form.

Red Label

Tradition, Revoiced The Red Label is where the past and present meet. It is built for players who love the familiar language of the great pre-war American steelstring guitars — the authority, balance, dryness, attack, and heritage associated with classic designs played by icons like Johnny Cash and Tony Rice. But tradition should not become a cage. A Red Label is not built as a museum copy. We recreate certain vintage museum pieces, such as 19th-century Martins and the Martin D50, but we do it with a distinct Singaporean style.

We adopt necessary modern elements: Rigid Rim technology, carbon-fiber neck reinforcements, wider slotted headstocks, and an ultrathin, environmentally friendly polyurethane finish. We combine this with old-school techniques like hot hide glue construction. Finally, I use a proprietary method of voicing the traditional X-brace specifically for these models, ensuring the tone is familiar and fundamental, but with a responsiveness you rarely find in a factory-built traditional guitar. It is tradition, but not nostalgia. It respects the old vocabulary, but it is not trapped by it.

Black Label

The Black Label is Hozen's ergonomic philosophy made visible. It is built around the modern player who needs comfort, response, control, and a guitar that does not resist long hours of playing. This is especially important for fingerstyle players, where touch, dynamics, and physical ease are inseparable from sound. Every curve has a purpose. The Manzer Wedge reduces physical burden without sacrificing tonal depth. The Laskin-inspired armrest softens the contact point. The Soundport returns part of the guitar's voice to the player. To achieve this living voice, every Black Label features a proprietary bracing structure I designed specifically to improve bass response.

The design is modern, coherent, and minimalist, utilizing clean wood bindings and rosettes. The Black Label is not designed to impress the eye first; it is designed to remove resistance from the body. The guitar disappears. The music speaks.

Green Label

A serious ukulele should not be treated as a small novelty instrument. I have always had an affection for the popular Hawaiian instrument. The Green Label brings boutique acoustic craftsmanship to the ukulele, treating it with the same seriousness of response, comfort, projection, and refinement as our guitars. A small body exposes the maker—there is nowhere to hide. These ukuleles are a notch above their class, featuring carbon-fibre neck reinforcements, an innovative carbon-fibre bridge plate, a soundport, a bevelled armrest, and the stunning "Uchida-style " bevelled offset cutaway. It is a serious instrument for players who take the ukulele seriously. Green Label is small only in size, not in seriousness. The Ukulele, Elevated

Gold Label

The Gold Label is Hozen at its most restrained. Born from a conversation with international dealer Roger Schmidt, who noted that " people just want tone, " I desired to create the gold standard for players. No over-the-top fancy designs—just pure function and pure tone. It asks what a serious player truly needs, then removes what is unnecessary. Born from the bloodline of our Blue Labels, the Gold Label captures the premium market by utilizing hand-selected tonewoods, my signature handvoicing work, and time-consuming rigid-rim constructions.

It is offered exclusively with the Manzer Wedge for ultimate comfort, and perfected with Japan-made Gotoh machine heads and a hand-polished nut and saddle. It is confident enough to be quiet. It is our most honest guitar. Pure Function. Pure Tone.

Blue Label

The Blue Label is where craft becomes personal art. This is the home of one-of-a-kind heirlooms, rare materials, complex rosettes, and ideas that cannot be properly contained within the standard labels. These are the most time-intensive builds in the atelier. Made from my private stash of premium and exotic tonewoods, each guitar is designed and voiced as a one-of-a-kind piece. The Blue Label utilizes the absolute pinnacle of our acoustic architecture: floating back bracing to preserve neck angle stability without killing resonance, French-polished interiors to seal the wood against humidity, and exclusive access to the Back Bevel.

Brand Collaborations

The 12/48 Rule

Depending on the wood and the player's desire, I utilize either the Falcate bracing (for fundamental punch, focus, and American Travis-picking styles) or my signature Hozen Lattice Brace (for a deeply three-dimensional, overtone-rich sound that blends melodies beautifully). A Blue Label should not feel like a collection of expensive choices. It should feel like a complete thought. It is the sum of everything the maker has learned.

Brand Collaborations Hozen Guitars also works with selected shops and brands to build their own expressions of guitars.

This is not the same as a single customer asking for a one-off change. It is a planned model program created around a shared concept, tonal direction, aesthetic identity, and market purpose. To ensure these projects receive the proper material preparation, production flow, tooling, and voicing consistency they deserve, they are built only in meaningful runs: Gold Label, Black Limited Edition, and Green Label collaborations begin at 12 pieces Red Label and Black Label collaboration programs begin at 48 pieces.

Five labels. Different intentions. One responsibility.
